# Best SMS Marketing Platforms in 2027

The best SMS marketing platforms in 2027 vary by business size: Braze suits high-volume consumer brands running SMS as part of a multi-channel approach, Attentive suits retail and ecommerce brands focused on list growth, and Agentforce Marketing suits large organizations with the IT resourcing and budget to run a multi-product Marketing Cloud footprint. Klaviyo works well for smaller ecommerce teams, MoEngage for brands that want to keep their own SMS providers, and Iterable for consumer apps.

To help you compare them, we looked at consent and compliance, deliverability, throughput, stability, targeting, automation, reporting, and how SMS works with your other channels. We also explain what drives cost per message.

The right choice depends on your stage and size, so the list is split into enterprise, mid-market, and small business clusters.

### TL;DR

- **Match the platform to your stage and size.** Enterprise brands need a platform that handles everything at volume, while a small business sending scheduled promotions can be well served by a simpler tool.
- **Put consent and compliance first.** Look for a platform that records opt-ins with the date and message type, automatically handles opt-outs including replies beyond exact keywords, supports registration, and enforces quiet hours.
- **Compare quotes on the same basis.** SMS costs include the per-message cost, carrier fees, and number registration fees, so ask every vendor whether carrier fees are included or excluded in the rate they've quoted.
- **Decide whether SMS runs alone or alongside other channels.** Separate tools can lead to duplicate or disconnected messages, and unclear attribution, while cross-channel platforms draw every message from one customer profile, resulting in a more cohesive brand experience.

## What is an SMS marketing platform?

An SMS marketing platform is software that manages consent and SMS subscriber lists, then sends text messages to those subscribers through short codes, 10-digit long codes (10DLC), or toll-free numbers. It composes and personalizes messages, sends them on a schedule or triggered by a customer action, handles opt-ins and opt-outs through keyword processing, handles inbound replies, and reports on delivery and conversion. Some platforms also send RCS messages from a carrier-verified sender, so the brand’s name, logo, and a verification badge appear at the top of the message thread.

Before choosing an SMS marketing platform, you should be aware that SMS is a subscription-based channel where consent is a legal requirement rather than a best practice in the United States under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act and is subject to various local laws and regulations globally. Carrier infrastructure also sits between the platform and the customer, so deliverability is not entirely within any vendor's control. Carriers filter traffic they consider spam and set their own rules on number registration and content.

You might also want to send MMS or RCS. SMS is plain text, capped at 160 characters per message segment, which is how SMS is charged, but most phones will now combine multiple message segments into one so that it appears as one single message on the device. MMS adds images, GIFs, and video, and costs more to send. RCS supports verified sending, branded profiles, richer message types, and read receipts, with SMS as the fallback when a device or carrier can't receive it. Our guide to [SMS, MMS, and RCS](https://www.braze.com/resources/articles/sms-vs-mms-vs-rcs) covers the differences in full.

## How to evaluate an SMS marketing platform

The best SMS marketing platforms look similar on a feature list, which makes it hard to tell which one would serve your business goals better. These criteria cover 10 areas to look at, showing what good looks like in each one and the questions to ask vendors, so you can properly assess each platform's capability and how well it aligns with what you need.

### 1. List growth and consent management

A strong platform gives you more than one way to [collect opt-ins](https://www.braze.com/resources/articles/a-complete-guide-to-sms-marketing), whether that's a form on your site or app, a checkbox at checkout, or a keyword people text to your number. Whichever method you use, the required disclosures need to be part of it, because [CTIA's guidelines](https://api.ctia.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/230523-CTIA-Messaging-Principles-and-Best-Practices-FINAL.pdf) set out what has to appear wherever you ask for consent. Each opt-in should be recorded with the date, the message type, and the number. Opt-outs need to be processed automatically, including replies that aren't exact keywords, like a typo or "please stop texting me."

**Ask the vendor:** Do you have ready-to-use list growth tools? Can you show me the data that's recorded when someone opts in? Can you send a test message, reply STOP, and show me the next send being immediately blocked in real-time? What happens if someone replies "no more texts" instead of a standard opt-out keyword?

### 2. Sender registration and additional compliance tools

Before you can send in the U.S., the number you send from has to be registered with the carriers. You have [three options](https://www.braze.com/resources/articles/a-complete-guide-to-sms-marketing): a short code, which is the five- or six-digit number built for high-volume campaigns; a 10-digit long code (10DLC), which is a standard 10-digit number registered for business messaging through [The Campaign Registry](https://www.campaignregistry.com/about/); or a toll-free number. Approval times differ, but it’s a multi-week process, so it's worth knowing whether the platform has a dedicated team that handles short code, 10DLC, and toll-free registration for you or leaves it with your team. RCS goes further, and needs an RCS-verified sender approved before your first send.

In addition to collecting and honoring consent, there are additional US compliance laws and regulations that brands must adhere to. Quiet hours are specific times (usually overnight) when messages should not be sent. These should be enforced by the platform in the recipient's time zone rather than left to whoever schedules the send, because one mis-timed send to a large list of customers in different time zones means disobeying quiet honors. Check the [federal rules](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-47/chapter-I/subchapter-B/part-64/subpart-L/section-64.1200) and the rules for the states you send to, since the permitted window can differ.

**Ask the vendor:** Which parts of number registration do you handle, and which stay with us? Do you have a dedicated team that handles SMS registration and setup? Can you show me how your platform handles quiet hours?

### 3. Deliverability and carrier relationships

Every message you send passes through a mobile carrier, and carriers filter messages they judge to be spam. The risk is highest on 10-digit numbers, which carriers watch closely because they look like personal phone numbers, so content that reads as spammy or breaks formatting rules can be filtered even on a registered number. When that happens, a single overall delivery rate won't show you which carrier is doing it, so reporting needs to break error codes down carrier by carrier. Getting blocked traffic lifted means going back to the carrier, which is work you'll either do yourself or the vendor will do for you.

**Ask the vendor:** What happened the last time a customer's traffic was filtered, who dealt with the carrier, and can you show me delivery reporting from a recent large send?

### 4. Message throughput

Throughput is how many messages a platform sends per second, and your number type sets most of it. Short codes send 100 messages per second or more, toll-free numbers start at three, and US 10DLC throughput depends on your brand’s trust score and campaign type, which carriers use to set your sending limits. That difference decides whether a flash sale message reaches everyone while the offer is live, since sending to hundreds of thousands of people at once from a 10-digit number can take hours. It's worth asking about pacing too, because sending everything at once can push your volume past what carriers expect from your numbers.

**Ask the vendor:** What's your documented sending rate for the number type we'd use, and how would a send to our full list be paced?

### 5. Platform stability

Throughput tells you how fast a platform sends; stability tells you whether it's sending at all when your biggest campaign is scheduled. Peak retail periods are the real test, because every brand's heaviest sends go through the same platforms at the same time. A public status page with uptime history lets you check that yourself, and tells you how incidents are communicated while they're happening.

**Ask the vendor:** Where's your public status page, and what was your uptime during your busiest period last year?

### 6. Segmentation and personalization

SMS costs money per message segment, so who you exclude matters as much as who you target. Segments that update in real time, for example, keep a customer who has just bought out of the abandoned-cart reminder. Personalization builds engagement and should go past a first name, pulling in what someone browsed, bought, or left behind. Those same segments should work across your [other channels](https://www.braze.com/resources/articles/adding-sms-to-your-messaging-mix-5-ways-brands-can-prepare-effectively) as well, rather than being rebuilt for each channel.

**Ask the vendor:** Can you build a segment from live behavioral data and send a message with dynamic content in it? If I’m using more than one channel, how are these connected?

### 7. AI capabilities

AI now covers a lot of different aspects of campaign creation and orchestration, from how a marketer builds a campaign to personalization and targeting, to reporting and continuous optimization. It's worth getting clear on what a vendor means when they say they have it. Generative AI covers things like copy and image generation. Both can save time for your team.

Assistants and agents built into the platform save time too. An in-platform assistant can create or update a campaign from a plain-language request, suggest targeting and personalization, and answer questions about performance without anyone pulling a report. [Configurable AI agents](https://www.braze.com/product/ai-agents) take on more specific jobs, such as writing and localizing message copy from customer data and your brand guidelines, building segments, and choosing which path of a journey each customer takes. For SMS, an agent can also read free-text replies and turn them into something you can act on, like a sentiment score or an updated preference on the customer’s profile.

Personalization and content optimization go further, changing what each subscriber receives and learning from how people respond. Content optimization can test many versions of a message at once, combining different wording, offers, and calls to action, then send more of the combinations that perform best. The most advanced form of personalization is AI decisioning, which uses reinforcement learning to pick the right message, offer, timing, and frequency for each person and optimizes for a business goal you set, such as revenue or profit. Look for decisions you can trace back to clear reasoning for each customer. Measured outcomes are the only way to tell those apart before you buy.

AI can also check campaigns before they go out. Automated reviews run each campaign against your own rules, catching copy that doesn’t match your brand voice and tone, missing compliance requirements, and naming or tagging errors without a manual line-by-line check. A check before sending is especially useful for SMS, where a single mistake can reach your whole list within minutes.

**Ask the vendor:** Can you show me your AI running on real data, and the results it produced for a customer? Can you list every AI feature and where in a customer journey they would be implemented? Do you have an in-dashboard assistant that can help me build campaigns or complete other actions in the dashboard? Show me how to configure my own AI agent, such as one that reads SMS replies and updates the customer’s profile. Can your platform test many versions of a message and automatically send more of the ones that perform best? Can it personalize 1:1 for every user, and show me why it made a specific decision? Show me how your AI automatically checks my campaigns against my brand rules and standards to catch issues before they send.

### 8. Automation and triggering

SMS suits moments that matter right now, such as a delivery update, a product left behind in a an online cart, or a price drop. That depends on two things working together. Real-time data decides whether the platform knows about the customer action within seconds or on the next batch run, and automation decides what happens next, including the follow-up, the delay before it, and whether someone who converts drops out of the journey.

**Ask the vendor:** Can you trigger a message live from a test action, such as an abandoned cart? Can I set rules for what triggers a message, when it sends and what happens after? Can you show me a message sending in real time after a customer takes an action, such as browsing a product or making a purchase, and how long it takes to arrive? If a customer buys after the first message, can you show me them leaving the journey before the next one sends? Does customer data update the moment an action happens, or on a scheduled sync?

### 9. Two-way messaging and inbound handling

With two-way messaging you can give your audience the option to reply. Custom keywords let you answer predictable questions automatically and record what the customer told you. The rest can be routed to a person.

**Ask the vendor:** If I reply to a message, can you show me the automated response and the profile update that followed? And where does a reply go when it needs a person?

### 10. Analytics and conversion reporting

Reporting should carry through to conversion and revenue, not stop at delivery rates and clicks. Where SMS runs alongside other channels, it should also show conversion attribution, so you know which channel drove the sale. Holdout groups go further, since withholding messages from a random slice of your audience shows the actual lift from a particular channel rather than what it happened to coincide with.

**Ask the vendor:** Can you walk me through the reporting dashboards a marketer uses day to day? And can you show me a holdout group measuring the revenue SMS actually drove?

## The best SMS marketing software in 2027

The platforms below are grouped by the kind of businesses they suit, from enterprise and high-volume consumer brands to mid-market, and small businesses. Each entry covers what the platform does, how it handles SMS, including message throughput and compliance where the vendor documents them, and who it's best for.

We used our own 10 point criteria to review and compare each platform, but can only speak on what is documented online, so where there was limited or no information on a criteria, we chose to omit talking about it, rather than point out the information didn’t exist. The order within each group isn't a ranking, there were no scores given, and the platforms were grouped by business type, so this isn’t an exact like-for-like comparison.

### SMS marketing platforms for enterprise and high-volume consumer brands

#### [Braze](https://www.braze.com/product/sms)

Braze is a customer engagement platform that runs SMS, MMS, and [RCS](https://www.braze.com/product/rcs-for-business) alongside email, push, in-app, web, and WhatsApp messaging. Every channel draws on the same customer profile, so a text can reflect what someone just did in your app or on your site, and fit into the same journey as everything else they receive. Brands across retail and ecommerce, financial services, healthcare, media and entertainment, gaming, sports, travel and hospitality, restaurants, and on-demand services use it to run SMS.

##### SMS capabilities

Here's how Braze handles the areas enterprise SMS programs depend on:

- **Throughput.** Sending rates depend on the number type. Short codes send 100 or more messages per second, toll-free numbers start at three message segments per second, and 10DLC throughput is set by the brand's trust score with carriers in the US. This can differ internationally, but Braze supports each phone number type.
- **Setup and deliverability support.** A dedicated Messaging Operations team sets up sending numbers globally, works with messaging providers on deliverability, and guides brands through SMS and RCS onboarding.
- **Platform stability.** During the 2025 Black Friday to Cyber Monday period, Braze sent 59.9 billion messages with 100% uptime.
- **Keywords and opt-outs.** Standard opt-out keywords such as STOP are processed automatically and in real-time, alongside custom keywords. The platform also supports double opt-in, fuzzy opt-out, which catches replies that aren't exact keyword matches, and opt-out intent detection with an AI agent.
- **Subscription management.** Subscription groups keep consent separate by message type, so someone can opt out of promotions and still receive transactional texts.
- **Quiet hours.** A message that would land inside a quiet window is held back and delivered when it ends, in each recipient's local time zone.
- **Two-way messaging.** Custom keyword handling responds to replies automatically, and RCS suggested replies can branch a journey based on the option a customer picks.
- **Conversational AI.** Conversational Agents hold context-aware conversations with customers around the clock over SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, and web.
- **RCS.** RCS runs as its own channel, with a verified sender and its own subscription groups. Every RCS message includes an SMS fallback, so customers whose device or carrier can't receive RCS still get the message. RCS and SMS can be A/B tested within a single campaign to measure uplift.
- **Real-time triggers.** Campaigns and journeys trigger from customer behavior, message interactions, and backend updates as they happen.
- **Cross-channel journeys.** SMS sits in the same journeys as email, push, in-app, and web messages, with conversion tracking tied to each message. Those journeys can also sync audiences to ad platforms such as Google, Meta, and TikTok, to retarget customers who haven't responded on owned channels or keep loyal customers out of ad campaigns.
- **Send time and channel selection.** BrazeAI™ uses Intelligent Timing to send each message when a customer is most likely to engage, and Intelligent Channel to reach each customer on the channel they respond to best.
- **AI agents and campaign QA.** Marketers can ask BrazeAI Operator™ to build an SMS campaign from a plain-language prompt, with suggested targeting and personalization. Agents built in BrazeAI Agent Console™ can personalize message content and route each customer down the right path of a journey, and Agentic Standards checks every campaign against a brand’s own rules, including voice, tone, and compliance requirements, before it launches.
- **1:1 personalization.** For enterprise-scale programs, BrazeAI Decisioning Studio™ uses reinforcement learning to choose the message, creative, offer, time, day, frequency, and channel for each customer, including SMS, and optimizes for any business KPI, such as revenue or profit.

**Best for:** Consumer brands, from growing teams to global enterprises, running SMS as part of cross-channel journeys.

**Key differentiation:** SMS and RCS run from the same customer profile and journey builder as every other channel, with data that updates in real time, so each text reflects what a customer has just done.

#### [Attentive](https://www.attentive.com/messaging)

Attentive is an SMS and email marketing platform that also sends RCS and push notifications, with solutions for retail and ecommerce, food and beverage, travel, and other consumer industries. It recognizes the same customer across channels through a single customer ID.

Much of Attentive's SMS focus sits on list growth and compliance. Sign-up units include a patented two-tap sign-up on mobile and Reply Y on desktop, and standard flows use double opt-in to confirm consent. The platform also records consent and flags opt-out intent in replies. A dedicated team provides warming plans and deliverability monitoring, and a carrier relations team works directly with mobile carriers.

**Best for:** Brands, particularly in retail and ecommerce, that want a platform built around SMS and email list growth.

**Key differentiation:** A patented two-tap mobile sign-up for growing an SMS list.

#### [Agentforce Marketing (formerly Salesforce Marketing Cloud)](https://www.salesforce.com/marketing/mobile/sms/)

##### SMS capabilities

Teams manage, track, and optimize SMS in Marketing Cloud, including alerts, transactional texts, and marketing messages. Messages can be triggered in real time by customer actions, such as order updates and appointment reminders, and orchestrated in Journey Builder alongside email, push, and WhatsApp, drawing on Data 360, API triggers, and location data. Embedded AI suggests send times and preferred channels, and A/B testing covers everything from offers to emojis.

**Best for:** Large organizations with extensive IT resourcing and budgets to implement and maintain a multi-product, multi-edition Marketing Cloud footprint alongside Sales, Service, and Data 360.

**Key differentiation:** SMS sits within a wider suite of Salesforce marketing, sales, service, and data products.

### Text message marketing platforms for mid-market and growth brands.

#### [Klaviyo](https://www.klaviyo.com/products/sms-marketing)

Klaviyo describes itself as a B2C CRM, bringing email, SMS, RCS, mobile push, and WhatsApp together in a single customer profile, alongside customer service tools. More than 205,000 brands across 100 countries use it, they report 99.95% uptime across all its services.

##### SMS capabilities

Klaviyo collects marketing and transactional consent separately, and its Compliance Hub monitors a brand's SMS compliance health, flags issues early, and suggests next steps. Automated SMS conversations answer common questions and use keyword replies to learn customer preferences, while the K:AI Customer Agent handles conversations around the clock. Sign-up forms draw on more than 70 templates, AI optimizes send times and when forms appear, and flows automate texts based on customer behavior. Reporting attributes sales across email, SMS, and mobile messaging using last-touch attribution. SMS is available in more than 20 countries, with age gating for alcohol brands.

**Best for:** Ecommerce and retail brands that want marketing, customer service, and customer data in one platform.

**Key differentiation:** Marketing and customer service run from the same platform, with SMS drawing on one customer profile.

#### [MoEngage](https://www.moengage.com/channel/sms-marketing-platform/)

MoEngage describes itself as an agentic customer engagement platform, with more than 16 channels, including SMS, email, push, WhatsApp, and RCS, alongside analytics and AI decisioning. More than 1,350 consumer brands use it, and they report a 99.99% uptime across six data centers.

##### SMS capabilities

MoEngage connects to a brand's existing SMS providers, such as Twilio, Infobip, or Sinch, and routes traffic by region to balance speed and cost, with support from a dedicated deliverability team. The company says it sends 15 billion SMS a year, with transactional messages delivered in under two seconds. Compliance tools include opt-in and opt-out tracking, Do Not Disturb hours, frequency limits, fuzzy opt-out detection for replies like "Stop please," self-service subscription pages, and exportable logs for audits. Two-way SMS keywords trigger automated responses, MMS messages fall back to SMS when needed, and Merlin AI suggests audiences, send times, and offers.

**Best for:** Consumer brands that want SMS inside a multichannel platform while keeping their existing SMS providers.

**Key differentiation:** Vendor-agnostic SMS, so you can connect your own provider with no complex re-coding. You can also route traffic through the best performing esp in each region, so you can maximize speed and lower spend.

#### [Iterable](https://iterable.com/product/features/sms/)

Iterable is an AI customer engagement platform built around real-time journeys across email, SMS, push, in-app, and other channels, with an intelligence layer called Nova that handles decisioning and campaign building.

##### SMS capabilities

Iterable supports short codes, 10DLC long codes, and alphanumeric sender IDs, with full MMS support, custom opt-in and opt-out settings, and keyword replies that trigger custom actions. Opt-out keywords such as STOP are handled automatically by the SMS provider and synced to the user's unsubscribe status in Iterable, and brands can add custom opt-out keywords, including in other languages. Quiet hours are switched on by default for all new SMS campaigns, with a default window of 8 p.m. to 9 a.m., and messages that fall inside it can be held or skipped. A double opt-in flow confirms new subscriptions, and MMS messages convert to SMS in regions where MMS isn't supported. They also boast a full suite of SMS compliance and acquisition tools so you can stay compliant while optimizing the growth.

**Best for:** Brands already using Iterable for email or push that want to add SMS without changing platforms.

**Key differentiation:** Quiet hours are on by default for every new SMS campaign, rather than something teams have to remember to switch on.

### SMS marketing for small business and early-stage brands

## Choosing an enterprise SMS platform

The larger your program, the more your platform has to manage for you, like more sending numbers, more consent to protect, quiet hours in every time zone, and messages personalized for millions of people.

### What changes with enterprise SMS marketing

At enterprise volume, these are the areas where your platform carries the most weight:

- **More sending numbers.** Enterprise brands need more SMS short codes or 10DLC numbers for more markets, sub-brands, or different types of messaging, such as promotional and transactional. That means you need a platform that can handle the registration process for you and get your subscription groups set up properly.
- **More compliance risk and scrutiny.** A TCPA violation can happen to any brand that messages a user who isn't subscribed, and the risk becomes greater with more volume and more subscribers. Enterprise brands need a platform that handles every opt-out in real-time, even if that opt-out doesn’t include a standard keyword like “STOP”.
- **Frequency and prioritization.** Quiet hours and frequency management have to work across time zones, and message frequency and prioritization matter in general. When you're running many types of messaging at once, the platform should get a transactional alert to a customer before a lower-priority [promotional one](https://www.braze.com/docs/user_guide/messaging/messaging_fundamentals/message_prioritization).
- **Segmentation and personalization.** More customers, markets, and sub-markets make audience segmentation and personalization even harder. Enterprise brands need AI personalization and content optimization tools that can send personalized messaging at scale to the right users, instead of building segments manually.
- **Carrier filtering.** A single campaign send can trip carrier filtering, so you need monitoring and systems in place. Automated monitoring is part of what an enterprise platform provides.
- **Your wider marketing mix.** SMS needs to pair cohesively with your broader marketing mix and other channels, rather than sitting in a silo. Enterprise platforms provide a single customer profile, so your SMS can reflect your customer’s latest preferences, behaviors, and cross-channel interactions.
- **AI for building and checking campaigns.** More markets, sub-brands, and message types mean more campaigns for the same team to build and review. Enterprise brands need AI that can build a campaign from a plain-language request, run agents for jobs like localizing copy or handling replies, and check every campaign against brand and compliance rules before it sends, so the team can keep up as the program grows.

### Pizza Hut serves email, SMS, and mobile from one kitchen

With more than 18,000 restaurants worldwide, [Pizza Hut](https://www.braze.com/customers/pizza-hut-case-study) is one of the best-known names in food delivery, and it's committed to bringing the joy of pizza to everything it does.

#### The problem

Pizza Hut had a strong email and SMS program, but its platform had no native mobile channels and no single view of communications across channels. Getting data into the system was slow and complex.

![Two smartphone mockups show a Pizza Hut push notification and the app’s pizza offers and rewards screen against a pink gradient background.](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/b7pblshe/marketing-prod/8a802b01176f16ce2dea978a4d2bfb5c967bd7cf-2400x1200.png)

#### The solution

After moving to Braze in 2019, the team launched a machine learning test that optimized its email strategy in real time across hundreds of variants. It has since added push notifications and in-app messages alongside email and SMS.

#### The results

The email tests drove a 30% lift in transactions, a 21% lift in revenue, and a 10% lift in profit compared with Pizza Hut's standard email program. Its CRM team calls the cross-channel integrations and targeting capabilities "crucial."

### PureGym flexes email and SMS for a 206% lift in conversions

[PureGym](https://www.braze.com/customers/puregym-case-study) is the UK’s largest gym chain, with almost 300 gyms. Former members matter a lot to its growth, as up to 20% of people who join each month are rejoining.

#### The problem

Like many fitness brands, PureGym saw high membership churn and wanted to win back former members with rejoin offers. Many of those ex-members had out-of-date phone numbers or email addresses. PureGym’s in-house engineering resources were limited, and its previous CRM made SMS too expensive to use.

![Two PureGym promotional emails displayed on phones, offering a £0 joining fee and 50% off the first month.](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/b7pblshe/marketing-prod/1d86d7b9efa2d07c5387df141cc26cb420918b0b-2400x1200.png)

#### The solution

Working with Braze Alloys partner ConsultMyApp, PureGym built a cross-channel journey in Braze Canvas that used email and SMS together, reaching more ex-members than either channel could alone. The team cut back on daily emails, added personalization and countdown timer GIFs, and retargeted people who opened an email but didn’t convert. Connected Content delivered discount codes without the development team, and running both channels in one platform meant no more splitting sends or analyzing results separately.

#### The results

Email open rates rose 69%, and retargeting emails drove a 206% higher conversion rate than emails sent to all users. PureGym’s head of CRM said the team can now engage former members “in the right ways, convert them, and bring them back.”

## What SMS marketing services cost

Every platform charges differently, so the only way to compare quotes is to know what sits inside them.

Most platforms follow this pricing structure:

- **The SMS per-message cost.** What the carrier charges the platform, plus the platform's markup. Some platforms quote this as a rate per message, others sell [credits](https://community.klaviyo.com/service-35/understanding-billing-18240), where one text costs one or more credits depending on where it's going.
- **Carrier fees.** A smaller per-message fee charged by the carrier, typically passes through to you. Some platforms [bill it separately](https://help.attentive.com/hc/en-us/articles/4407276120340-FAQs-Messaging-and-billing) and others include it in the per-message rate they quote, so be sure to ask in order to compare apples to apples.
- **Phone number registration fees.** Usually one-time or annual. Short codes cost more to set up and lease than 10DLC or toll-free numbers.

MMS costs more than SMS, because you're sending a photo or video rather than text. Length matters too: a text is 160 characters, and if you go one character over, it splits it in two, so you pay twice. An emoji drops that limit to 70.

Some costs sit outside the quote. Growing your list costs money, whether through paid acquisition or indirectly through a sign-up discount. Maintaining SMS compliance and collecting consent properly takes your team's time, from keeping records to handling opt-outs, and replies can be billable, both yours and your customers'. And running SMS outside the rest of your stack means paying for a second platform, plus the work of keeping data in sync.

**Ask every vendor one thing:** are carrier fees included in or excluded from the per-message cost you've quoted?

## Should SMS live in its own platform or alongside your other channels?

A dedicated SMS tool is the right answer for plenty of brands. If SMS is the only channel you run and your team is small, a platform built for several channels brings integration work you won't get the value back from, but a single-channel tool will cover what you need.

The issues arise when brands start to [run more channels in addition to SMS](https://www.braze.com/resources/articles/email-and-sms-marketing-strategy), and do so in separate tools. Neither system knows what the other has sent, so customers can get duplicate messages about the same thing, and frequency caps only work in the channel they sit in. The messages themselves also feel disconnected, because your SMS tool doesn't have all of your customer data or know how they’ve interacted with another channel. That means a, a text can promote something they bought yesterday or ignore a preference they set last week. When that customer does buy, each system claims the sale, and you're left unable to say which message really earned it.

SMS point solutions typically only offer SMS. [Cross-channel customer engagement platforms (CEPs](https://www.braze.com/product/cross-channel-messaging)) offer multiple channels in one platform, so that brands can use cross-channel orchestration and create journeys that connect and all draw from one single customer profile for a more cohesive, connected brand experience.

See how Braze handles SMS, RCS, and the rest of your channels from one customer engagement platform.

## SMS marketing platform FAQs

### What is the best SMS marketing platform?

The right platform depends on your company's size, growth stage, and send volumes. For enterprise and high-volume consumer brands, consider Braze, Attentive, or Agentforce Marketing. For mid-market and growing brands, consider Klaviyo, MoEngage, or Iterable. Small businesses sending scheduled promotions to smaller lists can be well served by a simpler, dedicated SMS tool.

### What should an enterprise look for in an SMS marketing platform?

Enterprises should look for consent records they can rely on, number registration handled for them, throughput that suits large sends, documented uptime, and real-time data feeding automated journeys. Reporting should reach conversion and support holdout groups. It also matters whether SMS works within the same journeys and customer profile as your other channels, like email, in-app, web, and your paid media messaging.

### How much does SMS marketing cost?

SMS marketing cost depends on the platform, where you send, your number type, and volume. Most bills include a per-message cost, carrier fees, and one-time or annually recurring number registration fees. Longer texts, emojis, and MMS raise costs. Ask whether carrier fees are included in the quoted per-message cost, so you can compare quotes like for like.

### Do I need a separate platform for SMS and email?

No, and running them separately can cause problems. Separate tools can send duplicate messages, apply frequency caps to one channel only, create disjointed brand experiences, and struggle to show which channel drove a sale. A cross-channel platform runs SMS and email from one customer profile. A dedicated SMS tool still suits brands that only send texts.

### What compliance rules apply to SMS marketing in the US?

The TCPA, enforced by the FCC, sets the federal baseline for consent, opt-outs, and sending hours. Many states add stricter rules. CTIA [guidelines](https://www.braze.com/docs/user_guide/channels/sms_mms_and_rcs/compliance_and_delivery/laws_and_regulations) cover opt-in disclosures and restricted content, and carriers enforce those alongside their own policies. Breaking the law risks fines, while carriers can filter or block your messages. This isn't legal advice. Check with your legal team.
